One of the ways I think about engaging with students, especially asynchronously, as a mentor is to "meet them where they're at." Not everyone comes from the same place, or has the same circumstances, nor experiences even within those similar circumstances.
Connecting and engaging with students asynchronously can be a challenge. Such as was the case with international students from around the world. Being mindful of timezones and individual circumstances can go a long way in creating connection and engagement with students. Being cognizant and mindful of what others are going through I think allows mentors to better help and support students where ever they are in life.
